MIB Design - Top 10 Dos and Don’ts – This page contains descriptions, explanations, and solutions for the top 10 MIB Design errors. These issues have been collected over years from support questions and consulting projects. Soon it turned out, that a few misunderstandings of the Structure of Management Information RFCs produce a majority of over 80% of the syntax errors. This page is an attempt to help MIB authors to identify and avoid these, unfortunately very common, errors in order to increase interoperability and usability of SNMP based solutions.

Scotty is an extension for the Tool Command Language (Tcl) which provides access to various TCP/IP network protocols. The protocol interfaces allow to retrieve a buch of information needed to write simple but powerful network management scripts in Tcl. Scotty includes its own SNMP protocol stack, a SNMP MIB parser as well as a GDMO MIB parser and an interface to the CMIP protocol implementation called OSIMIS. You can also query the domain name system (DNS), send ICMP requests, use generic TCP/UDP services, invoke selected SUN RPCs, send and serve HTTP requests, and more.

XML-SMI Mappings – This area is devoted to information regarding current efforts to move forward with an XML Schema for the purposes of mapping SMI (and possibly ASN.1 in general) to XML. Here you can find earlier proposals, the current schema version being developed and promoted by Muonics with the involvement of others in the SNMP community. This schema is supported in MIB Smithy, which was used to generate the examples below, as well as some third-party tools. MIB Smithy Professional supports lossless conversion between XML and SMI formats in both directions.
